lately I've been reading (and knitting)

This is the kind of book you just can't put down. If you're looking for something to read I strongly recommend it. And the best part is that there's 2 more books (in case you get addicted to the story as I did!).

Oh!!! and there's also a movie, it's Swedish and they say it is very good.
As for my knitting projects, I'll share some really good news with you in a couple of weeks!

I came across with this bowl the other day...

As I was going through the pages of the new Alessi spring catalog and thought "oh this is BEAUTIFUL!!"... And then I saw Matali Crasset's picture and of course it had to be her design, so great and simple.

I had an opportunity to work as a staff member for a workshop Matali hosted at my university in 2004 and it was a great experience, I remember she took pictures of everything and she let the students who took her workshop really explore every single concept and design whatever they wanted to. I’ve asked some of my friends who were there to email me some pictures for me to post here.

Anyway, I think Matali has very interesting ideas and great stuff. I’d love to stay at the hi-hotel one of these days.

"look at everyone coming down the mountain"

-“Hey, look at everyone coming down the mountain carrying their snowboards…. Oh! I want to snowboard; we should try it next winter you know.”
That's what Santiago was telling me yesterday as we stood between Whistler and Blackcomb. When he finished what he was saying I turned around, looked at him and said:
-“Did you see that snowboard? That design was awesome. OMG! Look at the one over there!!!”
And after saying that I realized I had to post something about snowboard design.
So I did a little research and found this amazing company of snowboarders making snowboards for snowboarders.
They were established in Vancouver on 2002, and most of their snowboarders/artists are from Vancouver designing for them, so it couldn’t get any better. Great designs and lots of Vancouverites involved.

So thanks endeavor for your cool designs and fresh ideas.
Next winter I MUST learn to snowboard!!!

did you say art?

I recently bumped into this video  and I really thought it would be great sharing it.
His art is very impressive, I really enjoyed reading the "how" of each of his pieces.

Hope you enjoy!

the kind of house I would like to live in (eventually)

Casa IA is located in Valle de Bravo, Mexico.

OMG! I want one like that… but I would like it to be somewhere in a mountain with an ocean view (oh yes, that happens when you live in Vancouver… you always want mountains and ocean views, believe me!)

Turns out, the house was design by bgp, so I’ll tell you a little about him.
Bernardo Gomez Pimienta is a Mexican architect/designer and his work is known not only in Mexico but around the world, in 2008 he was named member of the American Institute of Architects.
I’ve tried some of his chairs and sofas and I must say I like them. I like the simplicity of his furniture as well as the use he gives to stainless steel. Here’s some of the stuff he does.
I hope you enjoy it!

Spring is here! and so am I.

I know I haven’t been a very consistent blogger, but sometimes I just need a fresh start.

Like when you are in the middle of your design process and suddenly you realize that what you’re doing is completely not what you pictured, maybe it was in the beginning but then as you move forward it’s just kind of a mess. That’s how I feel sometimes about things, have you ever had that sensation? Have you ever felt that something was lost in the process?

I read this “ugly phase of creativity” post and came to realize it’s not only me hating what I’m doing and getting all frustrated sometimes… that happens to others as well. So the post made me think (yes… I do think sometimes) that I’m going through this phase with design glimpse…, at the beginning I just wanted to blog about design, but then I happened and I started mixing design with my own experiences, and then I took some time off because I didn’t know if I should continue writing or not. And today I finally came to realize that I can’t separate myself from design because I truly believe we’re connected. Design connects me with others and connects me with myself. Am I making sense at all? Maybe not; I don’t always do.

The thing is that I believe architects, artists, designers and creative people in general are not able to just be creative with some stuff and don’t be creative in other aspects. I think we perceive and feel the world in a different way. That is why I if I want to continue with this blog, you’ll have to read some stuff about me from time to time, because who I am affects not only what I design but also the designs I like or dislike, if that makes any sense at all.

Maybe what I should have said from the beginning was that I’m going to continue with design glimpse as my personal, design inspirational blog.

Xmas race

December is always like a race against time... Isn’t it?

I've been side tracked all week; I know I've got to get a lot of stuff done before Christmas but apparently I don’t have time to do anything at all. I guess I’m not being organized.
Today after finally getting all the home chores done, I sat down, took a few hours to read some blogs, decide what I’m posting today and after finishing up with this I’ll start cooking and preparing some Christmas gifts.

I made a little image for you to enjoy during this crazy season! I hope you enjoy it!

I've been away...

The last few days of November suddenly became so overwhelming and I’m not even sure if I’m saying this was a good or a bad thing… I’m amazed of how fast time is going by, it seems like only yesterday Santiago, Pekka and I were at the airport back in Mexico City saying goodbye to our families and beginning the new adventure of the Canadian life.

It’s incredible we have been living here for four and a half months, we’ve met so much people, done so much new stuff and improved our life in so many ways I’m very grateful about it.
The friends I’ve made here are awesome and I’m so very happy life put us on the same place at the same time… Santiago and I have been talking a lot about life lately, I’m guessing big changes like those we made this year have redefined our way of thinking, and we’re trying to figure out what we want to get out of this new life we chose.
It has also been hard, leaving our family and friends behind, not to mention our jobs (hahaha) I never thought I would say this but I do miss my old job… but most of all I miss being an active part of my family. I guess I will never stop being a part of the “whole” but it is hard sometimes to feel stuff is going on and you’re not there to share it with others.
I’ve been feeling kind of blue; maybe that’s why I didn’t really made an effort to blog during the weekend. But you know what? I always feel better when I put my feelings on paper (in this case I think it would be wiser to say “I feel better when I type my feelings” but I like the sound of the other phrase… I guess it doesn’t really matter.), the thing is I decided to just let you know what’s been on my mind these days.

I took this picture as Pekka and I were walking by the sea wall while the weather was still nice... I felt the words would one day inspire me and would keep me going.

Christmas is almost here!

From all the holidays we get during the year, the one I enjoy the most is Christmas... the weather (actually this time since we're leaving in Vancouver I hope I'll experience the real thing... snow and all!), the food but most of all the spirit!
Today I went Christmas craft shopping with a friend. This year both of us intend to do all our decorations... so this will be an interesting thing to talk about later. But for now I want to show you some stuff I'm planning to get for my Christmas celebrations... (this I'm buying because I believe the figures are just amazing!!!!)

I just look at them and imagine the years to come when we have kids and we keep putting out the same Christmas decorations that will always be great!!!
They are from Alessi and were designed by Massimo Giacon.
When I get some of my Christmas crafts going I'll let you know!

Pekka

Hi!!! I'm posting some photos of Pekka... she can be a sweetheart or a little devil hahah but I still love her!

creative km is back!

The last three days I’ve been feeling very crafty… I’ve got a lot of stuff in mind and I believe the reason for that is that since arriving to Vancouver I’ve abandoned my creative side and I guess it’s just not working for me anymore… I have trouble sleeping because I keep getting all this ideas and images in my mind of all the stuff I’m just storing in the corner of my mind and that’s ready to be created… (I hope I’m being clear enough and you’re following what I’m saying.) I keep finding myself sketching all the time… and today during my lunch break I was sketching some stuff in my Moleskine (don’t you love those little notebooks!!! I think I’m addicted to them) and finally got a clear idea of what I’m going to do with the canvases I bought like more than a month ago!!! So when that’s ready I’ll post some pictures for you to see and comment about!
I have also been sketching some Christmas postcards and other Christmas stuff like ornaments and that kind of things… and I even wrote a short story for little kids, I’m doing all the illustrations for the story as well so when I have it ready I’ll let you know!! I’m telling you, my creative personality is no longer being put on hold… and honestly I’m VERY happy about that… I believe I’m the best version of myself when I’m being inspired.

I'm posting two images I found today that I loved!!!!! I hope you enjoy!

Eames rocking chair (and babies)

images via hive modern

If there ever was a rocker chair I would buy, it would be this one.... (and to be completely honest I’ve been dying to get this chair for some quite time now)
I have always told myself that when I get pregnant I’ll buy this chair… it’s a good excuse I think hahaha.

Today we found out that one our friends are having a baby!!!!!, I feel super happy for them and that’s what inspired my post for today.

So for those of you who’re welcoming a new member to your family:
I wish you the best!!!!

Craft Market

The weekend was crazy! Crazy weather (it’s begging to get really cold and wet!), lots of things to do and so little time left!

Between work, meetings, some logos and the book I’ve been reading lately, time is going by really fast!! But… today I went with a friend to the Circle Craft Christmas Market at the Vancouver convention center and I saw very interesting stuff, tasted a great chocolate fudge and had a really good time!
I’m posting some of the websites of the artists and the stuff I liked at the market (for those of you who get curious!)

some green (and orange) for our home

Since we moved I wanted to get some plants for our home.. back in Mexico we had two little bonsai trees, one was my husband's and the other one was mine. They both suffered a little because of Pekka (our yorkie), who kept trying to play with them.
I gave mine to a very good friend, and Santiago gave his to his mom. We know both of them are doing good.
For our new house here, Santiago bought a little plant with orange and yellow chiles, I honestly don't know the name for it, but it looks lovely, and it has Pekka very intrigued (this time we have managed to keep the plant away from her).
I miss our bonsais and have been thinking about getting another one, they're so lovely. But what I really love about this new plant is the colors and shapes of the fruits it has!!

----------------------
I found some pictures of uor bonsais... and some pictures of Pekka's little adventures with them.
Enjoy!

this was my bonsai wich is now living at Pau's.

this was Santiago's bonsai, his mom has it now.

this Santiago's bonsai after Pekka decided she wanted to play... Santiago was so angry he could not even talk!!! (and of course all the time I tried to control myself from laughing)

Is this cap beautiful or what? I just had to post it hahaha!
I found this caps on Jessica Hische's blog dailydropcap.com, she has great stuff!

family chairs

I’ve been dreaming about getting these wonderful chairs for my dining room… we’ve got them at the store for the Design House Stockholm event we hosted last month and I must confess I immediately fell in love with them.
They were designed by Lina Nordqvist. The chairs are intended to be a whole, a family. But each one has its unique character, as any member of any family would. They won the Accent on Design Award 2009.

“Don’t make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful, don’t hesitate to make it beautiful.”

Nov 6, 2009

While I was at my lunch break today at work, I decided I needed a plan strategy to keep up with the blog, all de DIY projects I want to get done before Christmas, and work… and life. This week I was having 4 days off… turns out I only got 1.5 days off. I’m behind on most of my projects for the week.
Sometimes I feel I need more hours on the day. But if I’m taking this blogging thing seriously, I’ll have to stick to the rules.
So, after giving a lot of thought I decided I’ll start blogging 2 times a week. That is to say, I’ll be posting stuff here on Tuesdays and on Saturdays.

After deciding this, I came up with a bunch of rules for myself:

- Go to the gym at least twice a week.

- Do a recipe a week from my cookbooks.

- Do 2 DIY projects during the week.

- Spend at least 1 hour a day playing around with Pekka.

- Try to keep up with my reading.

- Get on track with my sewing lessons. (I also want to take some pottery classes… I haven’t decided what I’ll do first.)

I think these are enough rules for now.

See you on Saturday next!!

Thanksgiving thoughts

logo variations

So... today I spent most of the day working on the logo for design glimpse... I ended up with these 4 logo variations, which I absolutely loved but thought would not work for the logo.
Since I spent so much time with them, I decided to post them here as well.
Enjoy!!

about design glimpse

Since we moved to Canada I’ve been all about blogs. I started following some design blogs and one night started writing for my own blog… it just kind of happened and I’m so excited about it!

I was advised not to study industrial design but did it anyway… I can be very stubborn and determined about things. My passion is furniture, especially chairs. I want to start collecting classic design chairs and have always dreamed of having a room to display them, for now I’ve only got the Wassily chair in white. I also love home décor and accessories, jewelry (what girl doesn’t right?), and of course my yorkie Pekka.

I’m also getting involved in cooking… I’ll probably let my husband tell you how I’m doing. And the thing I enjoy the most is reading, I get absorbed by it, I stop listening to outside noises, stop caring about time and totally get into the story, but I have always wanted to write, so I decided to create this blog.

I want people to be inspired the same way I am, to be captivated by objects, chairs, tables, dresses, or whatever it is I find. I want people to feel comfortable around design, because design is everywhere and it is part of our lives, so why not take awareness about this and welcome it.

WELCOME DESIGN, LIVE DESIGN, THINK DESIGN, INSPIRE DESIGN.
